RTFM … or use google!

March 29, 2009 at 4:39 pm (internet, odds) (, , , )

You know those times when you’d really like to help someone online (in a forum, an email, or whatever), but you know that the first thing they should do is just type the thing into Google and see what comes up? Well, now you can drop a really big hint that that is what they should be doing, by using the website ‘Let me Google that for You’ (http://lmgtfy.com).

This is great. You type in your query, and it produces an animation of someone entering the query into Google and hitting ‘search’. A pretty big hint I would say! So, lets say someone is asking how to upload a blog post, well, here is the answer – http://lmgtfy.com/?q=how+to+upload+a+blog+post (it will give your a tinyurl too if you’d rather have that).

Very clever and a lot more polite than RTFM!

Have you been caught on speed camera?

March 27, 2009 at 1:29 pm (internet, odds) (, , )

aka – can I get someone to type their car registration details into an unknown website … answer … yes! This website has been doing the rounds (again) as a hoax/joke site – www.i-database.co.uk. Its quite funny, but the ‘Internet cynic’ in my wonders – what do they do with all the car registration details that get filled in?

I also wondered, if it asked you for your VIN number too, how many people would type it in? Isn’t the VIN all you need to check the MOT status on a car? Would be an interesting experiment I think.

By the way, if you want to try the website to see what it does, just use anything that fits the basic number plate pattern.
