If you follow Internet technology, like I do, then you may be aware that the basic ‘telephone number of the internet’ the IP address, is running out. By around 2012, all the public IP addresses will have been allocated, and if the world hasn’t moved to a new version of IP addres, (IPv6), by then, people won’t be able to connect to the Internet. Its a bit like the switch from the old area 4-digit phone codes to the 01xxx codes, but unfortunately, with the Internet, you can’t ask everyone to switch over at the same time, as they did with PhONE Day in 1995!
Anyway, found an interesting gadget that does a geeky count-down. Not quite sure what happens with it gets to zero mind … will everything all just stop? Maybe that will be the end of the Internet …
Wanted to embedded the gadget here to show off all its geeky glory, but it wouldn’t let me, so you’ll have to settle for a picture or visit the main site here for it instead.
Whilst on the subject of interesting wikipedia pages, I also found the page that lists some of the ‘last pages of the Internet‘. Nothing special here really, I’ve seen some of these before – and there is a nice irony associated with having a collection of pages claiming to be the last page of the Internet …
What I did like though, was the page that claims to be the middle page of the Internet. A nice touch. Made me smile.
